The Licanius Trilogy: Do You Have a Choice?

The Licanius Trilogy

I started this series in July and finished it in the first week of January. The over arching concept of choice and what that means in a deterministic universe. Can one be responsible for your actions if they are predetermined? The statement held by this book is yes, you are. One plot device used based on this premise is a type of time travel. Going back in time doesn’t change what happened, it is a critical part of what happened. Meaning that the person in the future had to go back in time to make what already occurred actually take place.

The philosophy around determinism and self-determinism are fascinating articles that this book plays around with. I appreciated that Islington chose to keep to one theory, not choosing some arbitrary plot device to escape the ending by breaking with the foundational premise.
